If you are a fan of the Alien franchise or just ‘like a bit of scary’ on VR, you will not be disappointed by the experience this game brings to VR. For those that have played the game outside of VR I’m sure you’ll agree it is a very intense experience in 2D. In VR it is petrifying! but very enjoyable.

I first played this back when oculus had its DK2 (development) headset out. It was very forward thinking to enable this game for VR. Fortunately today, the game still provides as much of a thrilling experience as it did back then.

Alien: Isolation takes place 15 years after the events of the first movie, and here you play as Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley. Quick note, for those who don’t know, Ellen Ripley is the protagonist of the first Alien movie. Alien: Isolation was developed by Creative Assembly, which is best known for their work on the Total War strategy video game series. The idea of developing a game based on the Alien film series from 20th Century Fox was conceived when the company finished work on their 2008 title Viking: Battle for Asgard, after publisher Sega acquired the rights to develop Alien games in December 2006.

Get Playing!

• Make sure Alien Isolation is installed in Steam
• Install the desktop oculus application and get logged in
• Download Mother VR by Nibre here
• extract ‘dxgi.dll’ to C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonAlien Isolation (if you changed the default location for the Steam installation amend accordingly)
• In your Steam library, right click the game and go to properties. Add the -steamvr command as shown below.

• Connect the headset to the PC with the link cable. On the headset click the prompt to ‘allow access to data’.
• Within the Oculus quest click Settings > Device > scroll to the bottom to enable oculus link beta (this will change to the desktop based oculus home).
• Launch the Game from Steam.
• When I first launched the game did not load into VR. If this happens to you, within the video options within the game – select oculus. When you confirm the settings the game may quit but when you re-open VR should be enabled (the splash screen will still show 2D – when you launch the game VR will show).
• Once the Game has launched from steam the game should subsequently show in the oculus home (with link active) and can be launched directly from here.

You can use either the oculus controllers or an xbox style gamepad.

To restore back to non-VR mode change the property settings within the steam library to the below.
