ZXP installer not working Technical Question Anyone found any legacy versions of ZXP installer online as the latest one doesn't work for me (opens blank window, nothing else) Or if you've found a way of installing ZXP files. Can not install the extension using ZXPInstaller Before installation, make sure you are using After Effects CC.2014.2 or higher. If you receive a message “ Installation failed because of a file operation error ” when installing with ZXPInstaller, you may have installed the extension. If you follow all the Ae instructions and AEUX still isn't showing up in the AE WindowExtensions menu, do a manual install. You didn't do anything wrong, it just happens sometimes wth extensions.

CEP Extensions first became available for After Effects in version CC 2014. CEP extensions give you all the benefits as Script UI panels, however they also allow for much more complex and user-friendly interfaces.

Using an Installer

To install an extension, which has a .zxp file type, it is simplest to use an installer. Adobe has their own installer, however it limits your Extensions to what is available on Adobe's own platform. A much simpler and open option is to use the ZXP Installer from aescripts.com. It is available for free for both Mac and Windows.

Once you've downloaded and installed the ZXP Installer, simply open the .zxp extension in the installer. The ZXP Installer will take care of the rest. Once the extension has been installed, you can see basic information about the extension, such as its version.

To run the extension, restart After Effects and go to:

Installing Manually

If you would prefer not to use an installer, you may install extensions manually, however the process is not user friendly.

On Windows

  1. Rename your .zxp extension file to use .zip instead. (You'll get a warning, but just click OK)
  2. Unzip the file, you should get a folder. Rename it if desired
  3. Copy that folder into C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAdobeCEPextensions
  4. Restart After Effects
  5. Your extension should now show up under Window > Extensions

On Mac:

  1. Rename your .zxp extension file to use .zip instead.
  2. Unzip the file, you should get a folder. Rename it if desired (You may need a 3rd party utility to unzip)
  3. Copy that folder into ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP/extensions
  4. Restart After Effects
  5. Your extension should now show up under Window > Extensions

Whether you draw your own illustrations and spend hours preparing Illustrator files for import, or work alongside a team and constantly have to remind designers how to split art onto layers, there is a smarter way to work.

Illustrator and After Effects should feel like companion applications, not rivals. Let each app's strength compliment the other. Let Illustrator become a plugin for After Effects.

Work with shapes, not files.

# Selections

Select what you need and transfer it as you need it rather than spend all day splitting out layers for what you think you might need.

Art is messy business and having to stop down to prep files for Ae import can kill the energy of a project. Shapes may be pulled from any Ai layer as needed.

# Organization

This is, for the first time, totally optional. Feel free to transfer what you need and rename the Ae layers.

But if you prefer to keep those layers tidy, Overlord will also transfer naming so all your hard work wont be lost with a Convert to Shape Layers.

# Installation

  • Download ZXP Installer from aescripts + aeplugins
  • Drag Overlord.zxp into ZXP Installer
  • Close and re-open After Effects and Illustrator
  • Navigate to the top Window menu, Extensions > Overlord

If you follow all the Ae instructions and Overlord still isn't showing up in the AE Window>Extensions menu, do a manual install. You didn't do anything wrong, it just happens sometimes wth extensions.

  • Change the extension of the Overlord.zxp file to .zip. It might give you a dialog warning about changing the file type but ignore it.
  • Unzip this file to get a folder called Overlord
  • Navigate to the Adobe extensions folder:
    • Mac: /Users/**username**/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP/extensions/
    • Win: C:/Users/**username**/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/CEP/extensions/
  • Copy this Overlord folder to the /extensions/ folder
  • Restart Ae and look in the top Window menu for Extensions > Overlord
